7 Quick Takes Vol. 1

Seven Quick Takes Friday! The internet connection here at my lovely parents' house is finnicky at best, so rather than attempt to download the logo from Conversion Diary, I'm plunging into the blog carnival as is. With a fussy baby in my lap as I type, this is the best I will be able to do for an entry. Enjoy. 1. This is our moving-in weekend! We signed a lease for a 3-bedroom apartment and got our keys today. My darling husband is currently assembling furniture at our place across the bridge with his dad while I eat Nibs, type and nurse the baby back at the parents' homestead. 2. The apartment is two levels! This should probably apply to Quick Take #1 but it is so fab, I am putting it on it's own line. 3. My dear sister and her family arrive in less than a week to our blessed, foggy province. I am nearly standing outside of myself with glee! I envision strollercising with her, chasing around my hilarious, delightful godchild and watching my mother light up wi...

For Patty

Image
I recently found out my blog is actually read by more people than those who merely "follow" me. A quick call to my former place of employment revealed I have an avid reader I didn't know about. In honour of her keen interest in the minutia that is my life, I have written a blog entry solely for her. The rest of you are welcome to read, too! I have very fond memories of working with Patty. Nearly every morning, her big red minivan would pull up in front of my apartment in Barry's Bay, and I would fly out, often late, in a style once termed by my brother as "the least coordinated bat out of hell." Thereupon Patty and I would get into discussions about everything from my wedding planning -- as I was engaged at the time -- to parenting, to my weird choices in breakfast. I think she was most repulsed by the hummus with chipotle peppers on an English muffin. Patty always tells it like it is. It's because of her honesty that I was able to talk openly with her a...

It's been 7 years in the making

But as of Saturday, my husband is a university graduate. With having a new job, moving this very weekend, and of course, the arrival of our exquisite child, I don't think this event really matters to him. But it does to me. * * * * * * * * * * * * The wife of a perpetual student is one who chooses Mr. Noodle for lunch so that textbooks can be bought. She smiles as authentically as possible about borrowing a free, boring movie from the school library rather than going to a theatre. She takes the bus while extremely pregnant to buy groceries because owning a car just isn't feasible. She pukes on buses, too, when a little less pregnant and riddled with morning sickness. She willingly lives on a university campus, putting up with 18 year old hooligan neighbours who think that 1:30 am is a good time to scream and blare music. And last but not least, the wife of the perpetual student gives birth during her husband's finals. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *...

Mother's Day

I have only two pairs of pants which fit right now. They're maternity pants. I had Noah almost a month ago and I can't expect to wear any of my old clothes for... a while, if not... forever. I can't fit into most of my maternity skirts either. They either fall off me (which I must say, is encouraging) or sit uncomfortably at my incision site. I tell you this because Noah just spat up on my only clean pants that fit. Instead of feeling sorry for myself, I recalled this quotation, a perfect reflection for Mother's Day: "A mother is the most important person on earth. She cannot claim the honor of having built Notre Dame Cathedral. She need not. She has built something more magnificent than any Cathedral -- a dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby's body." -- Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty Thank you, Noah, for your spit-up on my lap. I will 'build my cathedral' of sorts with these pants.

Exciting news for the week Vol. II

We're buying a car! And not just any car, but a NEW one! A 2009 Pontiac G3 Wave, in midnight blue. How exceptional. Now if only I knew how to drive. . . .

Exciting news for the week Vol. I

I want to brag for just a moment. Guess who the newest writer for lifesitenews.com is? Guess?!

A little theology of the body

Noah is not even three weeks old, and he has already gone on two road trips. Last weekend, we took him to Toronto to meet his very proud great-grandmother among other relatives. He was as cheerful as could be. Just this past weekend, we took him to our former Catholic mecca, Barry's Bay. What an angel he was, sleeping soundly in his carseat for what should have felt like a very long drive (it certainly did for me, the recovering c-section recipient, who tends to forget to "take it easy". Oy.). And of course, he was a star at Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Academy's graduation ceremony. He even got an honourary mention on stage from John Yakabuski as being by far the youngest person in attendance, at the fresh-picked age of 17 days. What sticks out to me the most from this trip was the graduation Mass. I had hoped to nurse him when we arrived -- prior to Mass -- change his diaper, and even make myself look presentable. Given that we squealed into the church parking lot at 10:...
