It's been 7 years in the making

But as of Saturday, my husband is a university graduate. With having a new job, moving this very weekend, and of course, the arrival of our exquisite child, I don't think this event really matters to him. But it does to me. * * * * * * * * * * * * The wife of a perpetual student is one who chooses Mr. Noodle for lunch so that textbooks can be bought. She smiles as authentically as possible about borrowing a free, boring movie from the school library rather than going to a theatre. She takes the bus while extremely pregnant to buy groceries because owning a car just isn't feasible. She pukes on buses, too, when a little less pregnant and riddled with morning sickness. She willingly lives on a university campus, putting up with 18 year old hooligan neighbours who think that 1:30 am is a good time to scream and blare music. And last but not least, the wife of the perpetual student gives birth during her husband's finals. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *...

Mother's Day

I have only two pairs of pants which fit right now. They're maternity pants. I had Noah almost a month ago and I can't expect to wear any of my old clothes for... a while, if not... forever. I can't fit into most of my maternity skirts either. They either fall off me (which I must say, is encouraging) or sit uncomfortably at my incision site. I tell you this because Noah just spat up on my only clean pants that fit. Instead of feeling sorry for myself, I recalled this quotation, a perfect reflection for Mother's Day: "A mother is the most important person on earth. She cannot claim the honor of having built Notre Dame Cathedral. She need not. She has built something more magnificent than any Cathedral -- a dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby's body." -- Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty Thank you, Noah, for your spit-up on my lap. I will 'build my cathedral' of sorts with these pants.

Exciting news for the week Vol. II

We're buying a car! And not just any car, but a NEW one! A 2009 Pontiac G3 Wave, in midnight blue. How exceptional. Now if only I knew how to drive. . . .

Exciting news for the week Vol. I

I want to brag for just a moment. Guess who the newest writer for lifesitenews.com is? Guess?!

A little theology of the body

Noah is not even three weeks old, and he has already gone on two road trips. Last weekend, we took him to Toronto to meet his very proud great-grandmother among other relatives. He was as cheerful as could be. Just this past weekend, we took him to our former Catholic mecca, Barry's Bay. What an angel he was, sleeping soundly in his carseat for what should have felt like a very long drive (it certainly did for me, the recovering c-section recipient, who tends to forget to "take it easy". Oy.). And of course, he was a star at Our Lady Seat of Wisdom Academy's graduation ceremony. He even got an honourary mention on stage from John Yakabuski as being by far the youngest person in attendance, at the fresh-picked age of 17 days. What sticks out to me the most from this trip was the graduation Mass. I had hoped to nurse him when we arrived -- prior to Mass -- change his diaper, and even make myself look presentable. Given that we squealed into the church parking lot at 10:...

Welcoming Noah

I haven't blogged in so long, and for my few but faithful readers, you already know why: Our baby was born just over a week ago. I was due on April 15th. Guess what day I delivered our beautiful baby? Yes, April 15th. On Tuesday the 14th, Mom and I trekked off together to my prenatal appointment with my midwife. She noticed my blood pressure was slightly elevated and we discussed the possible explanations; she was completely reassuring, saying, "I'll see you on Friday for another home visit, so long as you're still pregnant" but suggested I go get an innocent blood test to confirm I was still the picture of pregnancy health. I went over to the hospital, discussing with my mom what errands we would run after this test, specifically, returning our digital camera that was dead, and getting a new one so to have pictures of the baby whenever it was to be born. Suddenly when in the hospital, I was being met with residents with a much more concerned expressi...

Baptism

One year ago today, on the Feast of the Divine Mercy, my niece became a Christian. This day was significant to me not only because Norah is my niece, but she is also my godchild. I went through a very difficult Lent this past year. The Saturday before Lent began, two students from Our Lady Seat of Wisdom, both of whom I loved very much, died in a tragic car accident. When Ash Wednesday followed that week, the sense of usual sobriety of Lent was intensified with unspeakable tragedy and sorrow. I spent much of the next forty days contemplating death and how much I felt unprepared to face my own. It was a Lent unlike any other I had experienced. Easter Sunday itself was still thick with the haunting thought of these students' death. I ate a delicious Easter brunch with two friends and my then fiance, feeling solemnly, hesitantly festive for the Easter season; we looked from our dining table onto a spectacular view of the same lake that took these two young people so suddenly. Easter d...
