An end of August daybook

Outside my window...
My "lawn" has become a jungle of weeds and the sky is rather overcast. The cool overcast morning makes me think of two of my favourite things -- autumn, and the East Coast. I always tell my Ontario friends and neighbours with a grin, "Oh I LOVE this weather! It's just like home!" when it's grey and drizzly. They think I'm nuts. But my hair has changed it's texture, moving away from the Atlantic Ocean and the resulting moisture in the air. I miss my East Coast hair.

I am thinking...
about this delicious blueberry muffin I am eating, which I made, thankyouverymuch, from blueberries I picked with my children. I felt like Little Sal's mom that day from my beloved Robert McCloskey book, and unlike Little Sal's mom, I didn't manage to lose any of them to bears!

That blueberry-picking day will go down in history as "the day mommy actually planned and executed something something fun!" Indeed, Noah excitedly said as we drove up to the blueberry ranch, "thanks so much for taking us to do this! This is the kind of thing Daddy usually does with us!" A high compliment, as he's decidedly the more fun and energetic parent.

I am thankful...
that this week Patrick is off work. We are going on a few excursions with our sweethearts as one last hurrah before school starts next Tuesday, and it will be a welcome rest.

Learning all the time...
Thanks to Spotify, I am learning about new music that I am loving:

It's a song ABOUT loving Paul Simon's music. How perfect for me is THAT?

Celebrating the liturgical year...
Today is St. Monica's feast day, and I have a special love for her now that I am a mother. I am going to find a special prayer to her for my children.

From the kitchen...
May every week involve tacos at least once.
Amen.

I am working on...
This blog post? Like I said, Vaayyyy-cayyyy-shun mode.

I am creating...
dayplanner pages as I map out our school year. We have two evening extracurricular lessons this year (karate for the oldest boys, ballet for Anna) -- a first for our family -- and with Patrick working OT five to six nights a week, there will be a lot of juggling in our schedule, and alas, it will primarily fall on me to get kids hither and yon. That means being prompt with dinners, homework time and so on.

Does it sound like I am complaining? Because in reality, I am decidedly not. I thrive on imposed routine -- I'm Gretchen Rubin's classic Obliger -- and September is so refreshing for snugging up and reestablishing routines (ahem, like bedtime before 9 pm....).

I am going...
to send Patrick to the store momentarily because we are out of shampoo and I insist on having a shower this morning. (I'm having a lazy morning in my jammies right now... which reminds me, the school year will be a shock to my system.)

I am hoping...
to get caught up on laundry folding. I think I'll need to commission my children to assist in this behemoth task.

I am praying...
for our Church. So very much to pray for right now.

I am reading...
"Owls in the Family" by Farley Mowat to the kids and we're all getting a kick out of it. And I am crawling my way through "The Religious Potential of the Child" by Sofia Cavaletti and Julie Coulter. It's actually a beautiful and enjoyable read but my attention span at night is

I am listening...
to the sound of a cricket chirping IN my kitchen. I'm trying to imagine it gives my home a cottage-y feel but it's actually downright irritating.

Around the house...
while on vacation, I'm enlisting Patrick to hang some art for me. Recently a friend declared that you can tell a lot about a woman by her decorating style and home decor style. As she said this, I realized my "style" in both home and fashion is primarily hand-me-downs from other people. That makes my style, what? Deus ex machina?

But I do have a vision for my living room, and considering we painted it IN MAY, it's time we actually hung up our artwork.

One of my favourite things...
right now? It's Elijah dancing to the Moana soundtrack. He has some serious moves. It's adorable.

This week's plans...
Camping, water park, visit to Montreal. AND GET A NEW (to me) OVEN.

A little peek at my day...
Booking last minute medical appointments before the bambinos head off to school next week, and excitedly receiving our Walmart order of new backpacks .

It's happening!
