A Daybook for May 1st
Outside my window...
The sun is beginning to sink behind my neighbour's house across the street, but it is still bright out at 8pm. It has been a warm, sunny, inviting day and it is a balm to my soul. My little Elijah took his first drink from the hose today, and I think that basically encapsulates summery childhood joy.
I am thinking...
about how today was stretching and a bit lonely, and how I hope to have a better day tomorrow.
I am thankful...
for Andrew Peterson's music. It's the perfect soundtrack to my introspection.
Learning all the time...
I've been reading up on dietary changes and it's healing effect on the brain. Thinking I need to up my fats and cut carbs out (again... sigh... and cry). This keto business isn't just a snazzy weightless technique.
Celebrating the liturgical year...
We had ice cream for dessert last night as it was the Traditional feast of St. Catherine of Siena, making it my name day (Catherine is my middle name). Now that it's May, I'm enjoying the Marian devotions in my Divine Intimacy prayer book.
From the kitchen...
I made chili again tonight.
I make it so much that I once made a meme about the endless amounts of chili in our house.
I am working on...
developing confidence in the things I actually know I am good at.
I am creating...
a list -- in my mind -- for our summer plans. I probably should put it on actual paper.
I am going...
back to school! Well, sort of. I just got word my tuition will be covered for me to do the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd training this summer. It's a week of intensive training and diving into the pedagogy of this beautiful ministry to children. I am so, so excited for this opportunity.
I am hoping...
for a good night's sleep.
I am praying...
the Novena to Our Lady of Sorrows. Patrick and I were listening to a talk by Fr. Chad Ripperger on Sunday, and this priest mentioned that there is a tradition to pray to Our Lady of Sorrows for one's children. If they are going through a hard time, especially if the parents don't know what the problem is, or how to help, she has a special charism of revealing secrets. I suppose it's because she knew the secret depth of Christ's suffering? I'm not sure why this has become a tradition. But in any case, I am praying to her for a particular need for one of my children.
I am reading...
Will Wilder: The Relic of Perilous Falls by Raymond Arroyo. I heard it mentioned on the Read-aloud Revival podcast so I bought a copy for my boys, but it's too mature for Isaiah at this time. Noah, however, has been gobbling it up reading it to himself, so we have made a date to go out and discuss it, meaning I need to plow through it tonight.
I'm delighted to be at the stage of parenting now that I can have a book club with my own child.
Pondering these words...
I am listening...
to Ben Folds Five sing "The Luckiest." It makes me cry every time; it's so beautiful.
(Also, if you're not a listener to embedded videos person [and I know you're out there], give yourself the gift of at least looking up the words to this song.)
Around the house...
As seen on my Instagram.
I have lost the will to try.
One of my favourite things...
is watching my children play together. Today was full of that as we let them use the hose for the first time in 2018. Isaiah declared, "I don't even know how long I've been waiting for this, but it is an awesome day."
Indeed.
This week's plans...
do laundry and try to be kind.
A little peek at my day...
lots of outdoor time and reading to the kids. Elijah fell asleep on my lap for the second time in a week (his sleeping routine is screwed up these days) and it was just heaven to soak in his babyness for just a fleeting, joyous moment.
His squishy cheeks are to die for.

"If the winds of temptation arise, if you run into the reefs of trials,
look to the star, call upon Mary.
In danger, sorrow, or perplexity, think of Mary, call upon Mary."
