An April Daybook

Outside my window...
there is still much snow on the ground, but I also see the icicles dripping from my roof; the temperatures are rising, and Spring will finally arrive (supposedly?). I can't wait.

Well said.

I am thinking...
that as much as I buck limitations and restrictions -- nobody puts baby in a corner! -- I feel my best when I operate within them. Specifically, calorie-counting and budgeting. I took the week off from counting my calories during the Octave of Easter because... Easter... and I hadn't brought my food scale to Halifax, and it's vaguely annoying tracking my food. Surprise, surprise, I gained weight (not a lot, mind you, but still). Now I am back on the bandwagon and I feel so much more in control!

Likewise, I've reverted to paying cash for groceries. Yes, I feel a little silly walking around the grocery store, doing a prolonged addition problem as I add each item to my cart (and yes, I am literally writing prices and adding on paper, mental math being one of my weakest of weaknesses). But... we have financial goals, people. And saving money on this constant expense means we might actually meet them.

I am thankful...
for my parents' marriage. It's such a refuge for me and my siblings, our children, and their friends and siblings, too. May Patrick and I be so blessed.

Learning all the time...
tonight we dig into "The Prairie Thief" by Melissa Wiley. I hope and assume read-alouds count in this category?

Celebrating the liturgical year...
I hung up my Easter banner. Literally minutes before I started writing this post... because I knew this prompt was coming, and I wanted to have something to say! Ha!

From the kitchen...
Stew, stew, always the stew.

I am working on...
getting up earlier to pray in silence. It is. not. easy. for me. I always have my excuses, and one of them is insomnia... but I've decided if I can't sleep at 3 AM, then I could have my prayer time then and tuck myself back into bed a few hours later.

I am creating...
order in my home, which feels very refreshing. Sprucing up the laundry room, decluttering as I go. Deep sighs of relief.

The babies like playing in the clean sheets + laundry baskets whilst I work.

I am going...
to deliver my husband's lunch across the driveway in a matter of minutes; I love that I get to see him throughout the day since he works from home.

I am hoping...
for some nice weather soon, especially since Noah's birthday is on Sunday!

I am praying...
for a number of things, especially for some friends who are suffering right now, and the people of Saskatchewan affected by the tragedy with the Humboldt Broncos.

I am reading...
"Last Child in the Woods" by Richard Louv, and it's challenging me to take my children (and myself!) outside.

Pondering these words...

“I regret many things I’ve done,” he said, “but most of all I regret those moments when I said to Fear, ‘You are my master.” from "The Green Ember"

Sorry, I don't know how to tilt the picture properly...

I am listening...
to the sound of my daughter playing with one of her friends. And catching up on one of my favourite podcasts, "The Mom Hour."

Around the house...
I'm looking at my house-frumpy  living room and getting exceedingly excited to repaint it. My MIL gave me several cans of paint in the shade I was dreaming of, Benjamin Moore's Sunburst, and once that's done, I can finally hang the art I have tucked here and there for that dreamed-of time in the future when my house can look like a home and not a shack.

I desperately want to do a gallery wall, although heaven help me, I do not have a home decorating gift!

One of my favourite things...
I have lots of things I love, but right now, one that's bringing me joy is my favourite shirt from Old Navy. Why doesn't everything have a boatneck? My fave.

This week's plans...
Mostly home-y things to decompress, unpack and get organized back into real life. Tomorrow, though, I have a meeting with our pastor about getting a catechism program going at our parish! Stay tuned...

A little peek at my day...
Pretty much what I've already said. Although Patrick is going out tonight so I might just enjoy some dark chocolate a lame-but-cute chick flick ("13 going on 30"is a favourite of mine) while he's gone.
