On the 12th day of Christmas

I gave to myself
an evening of crafting
while my husband read "A Christmas Carol" aloud to me
(Are you swooning yet?)

I'm pretty pleased with myself. I made something this evening! Well, in reality I only decoupaged something, but still, my own bare hands turned something kinda hokey looking

comme ca:

Just a plain old jewelry box.

into something more sophisticated (at least, I think):

If you look closely, you'll see that those bits of paper are actually hacked from The Complete Works of Shakespeare.

Who in their right mind cuts Shakespeare to pieces, you ask?

Not I, at least usually. But this particular edition of Shakespeare has been known for some time in our home as "The Vomit Shakespeare". I will spare you the details, but yes, the cover was once vomited on.

I wasn't enticed to read it much after that.

But it seemed so Pinterest-y chique of me to use Shakespeare for a little upcycled word-art with Mod Podge. (How many crafter buzzwords can I fit in one sentence? Really now!)

And now I have a nicer place to put my (very small) jewelry collection! Hurray!

Plus, being a Literature major, a Shakesperean decoupage makes me feel delightfully happy. I couldn't resist choosing King Lear, Twelfth Night and Much Ado about Nothing as my particular choices, as each brings back special memories from various stages of my education.

Speaking of which, someday I intend to read Shakespeare's entire corpus. (Do you know the ever-awesome Fr. James Schall reads the complete works every YEAR?!) Not now. Not even close to now.

I have only one New Year's Resolution this year, which is lovely and exciting but rather overwhelming, and I have chosen not to talk about it here just yet.
Stay tuned.

  1. Do you own another complete works of Will? If not, you're welcome to take mine. It's a hardcover I picked up on the cheap at JWD a million years ago. (Like Andrew Connolly era.) And I've never gotten around to reading it, so it's yours if you'd like. (Oh, and CUTE jewelry box!!)

  2. Well we do have another, nicer, non-vomitted on Shakespeare, but Patrick was pretty shocked that I cut up Shakespeare. I pointed out we already had one, and he said "But how can we read Shakespeare *together*?"
Anyhoo if you find someone who has NO Shakespeare then give it to him or her, but otherwise give it to me :)
