Chatting with a little one

I am so fascinated with the way I see the cogs in Noah's brain turning as he works at what must be the exhausting task of learning English.

He doesn't speak in sentences yet, but he throws together cute phrases that delight us.

One of his first two-word phrases was "one more." He learned it many months ago at the food court in the mall. My mom and I were enjoying some really healthy wheat grass smoothies (I mean, er, New York Fries) when Noah wanted in. Mom taught him to say "one more, please" (except he kept dropping the 'please'; fair enough, it was his first time saying two words together ever!) and he has been using this phrase ever since. My new favourite version? "One more bock-bock!" (meaning "I want more chicken!).

Even though he doesn't say a lot, he understands an amazing amount. He also entertains me to no end with what he notices!

Me. What does Fr. Ron have on his face?
Noah. Beard!
Me. What does Daddy have on his face?
Noah. Beard!
Me. What does Mommy have on her face?
Noah. Milk.

And yes, I did have a milk mustache at the time.

He's also learning his colours. The two he knows consistently are blue and purple. He confuses the two sometimes, because admittedly, some shades of purple do look like blue. And he generally only points out these colours, because he knows he's right.

Since we talk about Baby Appleseed a fair bit, Noah has become quite fond of his brother or sister. He often lifts up my shirt (at even once at Mass... huh...) and says "hi!" to the baby. Today when he was going to do that, he stopped, looked quizzically and said "purple?"

Oh yes, Noah, here's a new phrase for your repetoire:

stretch marks.
