Stuff I like: Mommy Uniform
{I have decided to do a "Stuff I like" series for the next while. I often have NOTHING interesting to say when I sit down at the computer, so this might give me some inspiration. Hope you like it.}
I used to fantasize I was required to wear a school uniform. In grade five, I actually insisted from time to time for my mom to braid my hair into tight pigtail braids so I could match my kilt, tights and blouse-sweater vest combo. Don't worry, I also wore jeans to school. But I loved wearing a kilt. I thought it made me more "ready" for school.
Boy, was I excited when I discovered that the crazy university I was moving to the middle of nowhere to attend had a dress code. Years later, my childhood dream came to fruition.
Then I got married, pregnant, gave birth, yada-yada, and here I am, a stay-at-home mom. What a beautiful vocation!
It's also a "career path", too, you know. I say that because I want people to know I willingly chose this; I wasn't clubbed into submission by my husband and dragged caveman-style from my desk at my former job to cook and clean, barefoot and pregnant-style.
No, I was raised in a family who had a stay-at-home mom, and I consider myself to have had a very privileged childhood because of it. So here I am, like mother like daughter.
So what's this about uniforms, then?
Well, some days I feel a little overwhelmed by the amount of STUFF I need to do in our little home. Other days I feel like I'm running around like a decapitated chicken, going from task to task, never finishing anything. Other days, I think bed and a book sounds much better.
Then I remember to don my apron, and all feels right in the world.
My apron makes me cook more efficiently, but also more gracefully. I feel like I'm floating around my little kitchen. It's like my womanhood superhero cape. Suddenly, not only do I get the tasks I would like to see done actually accomplished, but I feel more peaceful as I do them.
I only have one apron, and it's rather plain. But I think I would like to add to this collection. I consider it as vital as "mommy me-time". In fact, somehow, the apron acts as "me time" WHILE I busy about my day.
Fancy that.

Jenna,
ReplyDeleteI can't tell you how pleased I was to read this blog entry. I too have a love of aprons! I totally agree that you get more accomplished and with more determination when wearing one. It absolutely feels like the home makers uniform. We should get together sometime and make aprons :) or just get together and wear them!! There's something so feminine and empowering about wearing an apron around the house.
I wish I could say I was with you on this one. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy wearing an apron. I just never think to put it on!
ReplyDeleteMy secret to getting speedy and efficient around the house is to wear sneakers. Not as cute and Mommy-chic as an apron, but effective for me. :)
I love aprons...the cute ones are so darn cute :)
ReplyDeleteI have two that are very serviceable and rotate in the wash -- I wear those all the time to keep my clothes clean. But I have a bunch that are just CUTE.
And they do make you feel like hey! now I'm working!
it's so true :)
ReplyDeleteI feel so productive, wifely and homemaker-esque when I have an apron on :)
Okay, reading this post PLUS the other comments makes me want to try an apron experiment. Starting tomorrow, I'll make a point to put it on for the next three days, and see what happens.
